Block Bolsters x402 with Bitcoin Lightning Integration

Block has integrated Bitcoin Lightning Network support into the open payment standard for AI agents through its partnership with the x402 Foundation.

The integration brings instant, low-cost payments to the protocol, making it suitable for machine-to-machine commerce that autonomous software will generate as agents begin to act on behalf of people.

x402 operates through the HTTP 402 'Payment Required' response, allowing a server to request a payment mid-interaction. The agent pays and resubmits its request with the proof of payment attached, without needing to set up an account or enter a card.

The x402 Foundation reports 75.41 million transactions and $24.24 million in volume over the last 30 days, with stablecoin payments as the predominant use case. Lightning adds a Bitcoin rail alongside those dollar-pegged tracks, giving developers an option that settles in BTC with greater liquidity and stronger settlement guarantees.

Block's contribution can be understood less as a one-off integration and more as a move to position Bitcoin within the payment infrastructure being built around AI agents.
