Block Brings Bitcoin Lightning to AI Payment Standard x402
Block, led by Jack Dorsey, is integrating Bitcoin Lightning into x402, an open payment standard designed for AI agents. This move aims to expand Bitcoin's real-world utility in an environment where AI transacts small amounts at high volume without human intervention.
The strategy leverages the low fees and fast processing speeds of the Lightning Network, which processes transactions off the main chain, making it suitable for high-frequency payments required in AI agent-to-agent commerce. x402 allows AI agents to autonomously pay for API access, data, and digital service fees without manual payment processes.
The x402 Foundation, launched under the Linux Foundation in April, counts Google, Microsoft, AWS, Coinbase, and the Solana Foundation among its participants. With Block's addition, a Bitcoin-based payment rail has been added to a standard previously centered on fiat currencies and stablecoins.
