Block Brings Lightning to AI-Powered Payment Protocol
Block, the fintech company led by Jack Dorsey, has joined forces with the x402 Foundation to bring Bitcoin Lightning Network support to its open payment standard for AI agents. This move enables instant and low-cost payments, a crucial feature for machine-to-machine commerce.
The x402 protocol operates through the HTTP 402 'Payment Required' response, allowing servers to request payments mid-interaction. When an AI agent calls a paid API or accesses a digital service, the server can return payment instructions on the spot. The agent pays and resubmits its request with proof of payment attached.
Block's integration of Lightning into x402 positions Bitcoin as a suitable solution for high-frequency payments generated by autonomous software agents. With 75.41 million transactions and $24.24 million in volume over the last 30 days, x402 reports stablecoin payments as its main use case so far.
