Blockchain Association's Leader Steps Down Amid CLARITY Act Setback
The Blockchain Association has seen its CEO, Summer Mersinger, step down after a setback in the CLARITY Act, which stalled major crypto policy priorities. The act would have established federal regulation for digital commodities and divided regulatory responsibilities between the SEC and CFTC.
The vote on September 15 failed to clear the chamber's cloture threshold of 3/5, with 49 senators voting against it and 4 Republicans joining Democrats in opposition. Senator Thom Tillis later moved to reconsider the motion, preserving a procedural path for another vote.
Kristin Smith has been named as interim CEO from October 17, 2026, after Mersinger's departure on October 16. The association will continue to engage with regulators and lawmakers while they consider another attempt at passing the CLARITY Act.
