Blockchain-Backed Ebooks Threaten Traditional Publishing Dominance in Crypto Market
The self-publishing segment for crypto ebooks is valued at $2.16 billion and growing at a rate of 16.7% per year, according to recent data. This lucrative market has attracted many authors who write about cryptocurrency and decentralized finance topics.
Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) remains the dominant platform for ebook distribution, accounting for two-thirds of US ebook sales and over 80% when including Kindle Unlimited reads. KDP offers 70% royalties on titles priced between $2.99 and $9.99, making it a popular choice among authors.
However, some authors are turning to blockchain-based platforms like Book.io, which has sold over 200,000 NFT-backed ebooks. These platforms offer higher royalty rates, typically ranging from 80% to 90%, but require authors to drive their own traffic and marketing efforts.
The economics of crypto ebook publishing depend on various factors, including audience size, pricing strategy, and distribution mix. A successful author can earn a median income of $12,749 per year writing full-time, according to the Alliance of Independent Authors.
