Blockchain-Driven Banking Revolution: What's Changing and Why

Share

The banking industry is undergoing significant changes due to the adoption of blockchain and tokenization. Morgan Stanley's Global Head of Banks and Diversified Finance Research, Betsy Graseck, stated that blockchain-based markets are making the batch-processing banking model outdated, saying 'This is the end of banker hours.' However, the numbers tell a more complicated story than the quote suggests.

Banks have accepted instructions outside office hours for years, but the delay in processing transactions begins after the instruction is submitted. Blockchain changes this sequence by giving authorized participants a shared transaction record. Once the network accepts a valid transfer, the relevant parties work from the same updated state instead of waiting for several internal ledgers to agree.

Tokenization applies this structure to traditional assets, representing them as digital tokens whose ownership and transfer history sit on-chain. This allows the asset and the payment for it to move together, completing both legs at once. However, instant payment rails already deliver 24/7 clearing without blockchain, raising questions about the necessity of tokenization.

The number of tokenized real-world assets reached $36.7 billion in on-chain value by June 2026, close to triple the figure a year earlier. However, more than half the tokenized market by value records no weekly transfers, and only about 10% currently see use in DeFi.
