Blockchain Goes Mainstream: SWIFT, SEC, and Institutional Investors Drive Transformation
The global financial system is undergoing a significant transformation, with blockchain, tokenized assets, and on-chain settlement increasingly becoming embedded in traditional finance. SWIFT, the organization that connects 12,500 institutions across 200 markets and 150 currencies, has introduced a new platform based on distributed-ledger technology, facilitating digital payments and tokenized-asset transfers. This development is particularly significant as several participating banks have already conducted real-time tokenized payments around the clock, using multiple currencies.
The US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has also approved a temporary Innovation Exemption for certain platforms trading tokenized NMS stocks, allowing technologies such as automated market makers and liquidity pools to be used in these markets. Major asset managers, such as Franklin Templeton and BlackRock, are bringing money-market products onto blockchain networks, demonstrating the growing importance of tokenization.
Institutional behavior during market corrections also provides insight into the growing adoption of cryptocurrencies. According to Bitwise's Institutional Crypto Adoption Report, none of the 15 major institutions interviewed reduced their crypto allocation during the market decline, with several institutions actually increasing their positions. The report highlights the resilience of certain institutional investors during corrections and their willingness to maintain or increase their exposure to cryptocurrencies.
