Blockchain Goes Mainstream: Wall Street Meets Crypto
Wall Street is adopting blockchain technology and cryptocurrency platforms are expanding their offerings to include traditional financial instruments, according to a recent report. Coinbase has filed with the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) to offer perpetual futures on around 50-60 US stocks, including Apple, Microsoft, Tesla, and Nvidia. This would be the first time perpetual futures were traded on a regulated US venue.
The European Central Bank (ECB) has also launched Pontes, connecting its payment system to blockchain-based financial markets. The ECB aims to allow investors to settle blockchain transactions using ECB-backed euros rather than stablecoins.
The convergence of traditional finance and cryptocurrency platforms raises concerns about the increased risk for retail investors. The OECD warns about leverage, liquidity mismatches, opaque governance, cyber risks, and consumer protection.
