Blockchain Networks Bracing for Quantum Threats: Algorand and Aptos Lead the Way
Coinbase's Independent Advisory Board on Quantum Computing and Blockchain has released a position paper assessing the readiness of major blockchain networks for potential quantum threats. The board stated that it has 'high confidence' that a powerful enough quantum computer will eventually exist, but placed this outcome at least a decade away.
The report highlights Algorand and Aptos as relatively advanced in addressing quantum risks. Algorand was described as among the first networks to deploy post-quantum cryptography in production, allowing users to create quantum-resistant accounts without protocol modifications. However, block proposals and committee voting mechanisms remain vulnerable.
Aptos also received recognition for its well-positioned account system, which allows for a single transaction to update the authentication key and exit exposure. In contrast, proof-of-stake chains present a different risk profile due to signature schemes used by validators.
