Blockchain's Amazon Moment: Stock Tokenization Gains Momentum
The concept of stock tokenization has been gaining traction in the blockchain space, with some arguing that it could be the 'Amazon moment' for the technology.
According to Token Terminal, if Jeff Bezos were starting Amazon today, he might focus on stock tokenization as his first big bet. This isn't about changing the underlying stocks themselves, but rather how people access, trade, transfer, and use them.
The comparison is based on the idea that the internet didn't change what a book was in 1994, it just changed the experience around it. Similarly, stock tokenization could create broader global access to stocks, with 24/7 trading and transfers, as well as interoperability across different markets.
Currently, only $2.8 billion of public equities are represented onchain, excluding ETFs. This gap is significant and offers a massive opportunity for blockchain technology to improve the customer experience and potentially scale significantly.
