BNB Chain Speeds Up Consensus at Stanford Blockchain Conference
BNB Chain is heading to Stanford University for the Science of Blockchain Conference (SBC) 2026, where the team will present a case study on consensus engineering improvements. The presentation, scheduled for Day 2 of the conference, will focus on how BSC went from a finality time of 45 seconds to sub-second speeds through deliberate upgrades.
The journey from 45 seconds to under one second is attributed to consecutive hard forks that shaved significant time off block production. The Lorentz hard fork brought block times down to 1.5 seconds, while the Maxwell hard fork, implemented on May 22, 2025, pushed the figure to 0.75 seconds through the BEP-524 protocol.
The technical upgrades behind these improvements include consecutive block production and validator sync optimizations. The conference, organized by the Stanford Center for Blockchain Research (CBR), Berkeley RDI, and the Initiative for Cryptocurrencies and Contracts (IC3), focuses on blockchain protocols, network performance, and decentralized finance solutions.
