BNY Mellon and Kraken Parent Company Explore Digital Asset Infrastructure Deal
BNY Mellon (NYSE: BNY), a global leader in custody and asset servicing, is reportedly in private discussions with Payward, the Wyoming-based parent company of the cryptocurrency exchange Kraken, about a potential collaboration on digital asset infrastructure. Sources familiar with the matter describe the talks as exploratory, with no signed agreement or confirmed deal yet.
The discussions cover a broad range of services, including digital-asset products, safekeeping, wealth management, trading, payments, and other financial market functions. Much of this activity could be managed through Payward Services, a business-to-business platform designed for banks, exchanges, and asset managers.
If the talks progress, the arrangement might resemble Payward's recent partnership with Nasdaq, where Nasdaq Ventures invested $100 million in September to expand work on tokenized equities and markets operating outside conventional trading hours. One insider noted that certain operational features under discussion with BNY mirror those infrastructure elements, though no terms or timelines have been disclosed.
For Payward, a deal with BNY would align with its strategy of selling Kraken's supporting systems to traditional financial institutions, rather than relying solely on retail or institutional accounts on the exchange. BNY, known for its digital asset custody platform and work on tokenized deposits, could enhance its offerings by integrating crypto-native capabilities through this partnership.
The reported discussions reflect a broader trend where large custody banks explore limited partnerships with crypto firms instead of launching their own exchanges. However, regulatory review, operational controls, and commercial terms would still need to be settled before any formal agreement is reached.
