BOJ Rate Hike Sends Yen Borrowing Risk Back into Focus
The Bank of Japan has raised interest rates to a 31-year high of 1.25%, marking its second rate hike in three months. This decision has led to an increase in Bitcoin's price against the yen, with the BTC/JPY pair trading on the Tokyo-based bitFlyer exchange rising by 0.5% to 12.06 million yen.
The US dollar also strengthened against the yen following the announcement, reaching a high of 156.70 from 156.20 earlier. This has brought carry trade risk back into focus, as investors who borrowed in yen and invested in higher-yielding assets may now be forced to unwind their positions.
This type of transaction, known as carry trade, involves using low-cost yen debt to finance investments in other markets. With interest rates rising, the appeal of these transactions is reduced, leading to potential losses for investors who hold such positions.
