BOJ's Bold Rate Hike Surpasses 1995 High, Impacts Crypto Markets
The Bank of Japan (BOJ) took a bold step by raising its benchmark interest rate to 1.25% in 2026, surpassing the 1995 high. This move signals a departure from decades of ultra-easy money policies and is expected to impact global investors, including crypto traders.
The BOJ's policy board voted 7-2 to raise the uncollateralized overnight call rate by 25 basis points, as anticipated by markets. The decision was made despite concerns about economic weakness due to Middle East tensions and a modest rise in underlying inflation towards its 2% price stability target.
The increase in interest rates will affect the yen carry trade, which relies on borrowing yen at low rates to finance leveraged positions in Bitcoin, Ether, and stablecoin liquidity trades. As funding costs rise, Japanese insurers and banks are likely to repatriate capital back home, leading to a potential tightening of dollar liquidity and fueling deleveraging in perpetual futures.
The BOJ aims for its core CPI to exceed 2% by H2FY26, with real rates remaining accommodative. The legacy of the yen's role as a globally traded funding currency is far from over and will depend on future data and policy decisions.
