Bond Turmoil Drives Up Demand for Gold and Bitcoin
The prices of Bitcoin and gold have surged in recent days as investors respond to turmoil in the bond market and concerns about the value of the U.S. dollar.
A shakeup in the bond market has led to higher demand for assets like Bitcoin and gold, which serve as stores of value during periods of economic uncertainty. The prices of Bitcoin have neared $80,000, a 22% surge after hovering below $65,000 for months, while gold hit a recent high this week.
The rally accelerated after the Treasury Department announced that it would soon double the maximum size of its bond buyback from $2 billion to $4 billion. This move was intended to limit the rise of long-term government bond yields and minimize borrowing costs. However, some investors are questioning the effectiveness of this strategy.
Russell Rhoads, a clinical associate professor at Indiana University's Kelley School of Business, said that 'a few billion dollars isn't going to get you very far in a market that's the size is in trillions.' This sentiment reflects broader concerns about the bond market and the potential impact on the economy.
