Brazil Election Set to Shape Crypto Regulations Amid New Licensing and Reporting Standards
The Brazilian election on October 4 is set to influence crypto regulations in the country. According to recent polls, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva is leading with 45% of valid votes, followed by Flavio Bolsonaro with 42%. The Central Bank of Brazil has introduced regulations for virtual asset services during Lula's current administration.
The new framework requires covered virtual-asset providers to seek authorization and includes measures such as consumer protection, internal controls, and anti-money laundering activities. Resolution BCB 588 introduces reporting obligations for virtual-asset transactions using self-custodied wallets, requiring institutions to report certain information when a transfer exceeds $10,000 or the corresponding amount.
The regulations will continue during the transition period after the election, with further measures set to take effect on November 6. The next government will inherit licensing requirements, anti-money laundering regulations, and self-custody reporting rules for the country's significant cryptocurrency market estimated at $252.5 billion by Chainalysis.
