Brazil Introduces $10K Self-Custody Reporting Threshold for Crypto Trades
The Central Bank of Brazil has published Resolution BCB No. 588, amending the country's existing anti-money laundering (AML) framework to include certain virtual asset transfers involving self-custody wallets.
Starting October 1, 2026, covered institutions will be required to report qualifying crypto transfers worth $10,000 or more to and from self-custody wallets to Brazil's Financial Activities Control Council (COAF).
This new rule does not impose a transaction limit or ban on self-custody, but rather serves as a reporting trigger. Users can continue holding and transferring cryptocurrencies through their private keys.
The Central Bank stated that self-custody can reduce information available for monitoring and risk assessment, whereas regulated custodians maintain customer and transaction data within supervised financial institutions.
