The Central Bank of Brazil has reported that demand for cryptocurrency assets, including Bitcoin and ether, reached over $14 billion during the first half of 2026. This represents a 135% increase over H1 2025, indicating continued growth in the market.

Dollar-pegged stablecoins are driving over 90% of this demand, serving as essential proxies for payments and cross-border settlements. Brazilians purchased nearly $2.632 billion in stablecoins in May 2026, a 158% increase compared to May 2025.

The Central Bank's new regulatory regime, set to take effect in January 2027, will treat virtual asset providers like securities firms for better oversight. This means VASPs will have to comply with the same requirements as securities brokerage firms and foreign exchange brokerage firms.
