Brazilian Crypto Market Undergoes Significant Changes as Central Bank Tightens Regulations
The Brazilian cryptocurrency market is undergoing significant changes as the country's central bank tightens regulations on exchanges and virtual asset service providers. The new rules, which include requirements for capital, governance, compliance, internal controls, anti-money laundering, cybersecurity, and information reporting, are expected to impact smaller players in the industry.
Several companies have already announced their exit from the market due to the increased costs of adapting to these regulations. Bitnuvem, a seven-year-old exchange, cited the new requirements as one reason for its decision to shut down operations. NovaDAX also announced the closure of its Brazilian operations, attributing it to the need to adapt to the new regulatory environment.
On the other hand, Mercado Bitcoin, a pioneering Brazilian exchange, received an investment of R$ 100 million from Tether, the issuer of the largest stablecoin in the world, to expand its business. The company has been operating since 2013 and has navigated various market cycles, including the rise and fall of Bitcoin.
