Brazil's Digital Asset Market Gains Momentum with Rapid Regulation
Brazil's digital asset market has made significant strides in recent years, moving from a broad legislative framework to detailed and comprehensive regulation. This transformation occurred over just three years, with the Central Bank of Brazil introducing granular requirements for Virtual Asset Service Providers (VASPs) in 2024.
According to Marcos Coelho da Rocha, Partner at Veirano Advogados, this rapid evolution is a testament to the market's willingness to be regulated. 'The market itself recognized that it needed to be regulated,' Nagel Paulino, Head of the Regulatory Division at the Central Bank of Brazil, explained.
Brazil's regulatory framework requires VASPs to meet specific capital, governance, and compliance standards. Companies must demonstrate compliance with local regulations, possess technological infrastructure capable of supporting regulated operations, have on-chain monitoring capabilities, and establish incident response procedures.
