Brokerages Rush to Invest in Crypto Exchanges Amid Blockchain Shift
South Korean brokerages are racing to acquire stakes in cryptocurrency exchanges as they position themselves for the blockchain-based transformation of traditional financial assets. Major securities firms such as Samsung Securities, Korea Investment & Securities, and Mirae Asset Group have made significant investments in exchange operators Dunamu, Coinone, and DigitalX.
The stated purpose of these investments is to strengthen digital asset business competitiveness and secure synergies. Brokerages plan to cooperate with exchanges on token securities issuance and distribution, as well as virtual asset services.
According to Hwang Se-woon, a senior research fellow at the Korea Capital Market Institute, 'Cryptocurrency exchanges are already large platforms with substantial investor touchpoints and have accumulated considerable know-how in digital asset management and custody.'
The expansion of blockchain technology's applications from virtual assets to securities is driving this trend. Token securities, which record securities on a blockchain-based ledger, are seen as existing securities issued in a new way.
