Brooklyn Man Sentenced for $16M Coinbase Phishing Scheme
A Brooklyn man has been sentenced to prison for orchestrating a yearlong cryptocurrency phishing scheme that targeted around 100 users, resulting in losses of over $16 million across the US. The scheme involved Spektor posing as a Coinbase representative, warning victims that their digital assets were at risk from a hacker and persuading them to transfer their cryptocurrency into new wallets he controlled.
Prosecutors claim that the stolen assets were laundered through multiple swaps across different crypto exchanges before being consolidated and converted into other cryptocurrencies or used for betting. The investigation linked Spektor's home IP address to several wallets from which cryptocurrency was stolen, with transaction records, blockchain analysis, digital forensics, and evidence gathered through search warrants supporting the case.
Coinbase remains a frequent target for phishing attacks, with last year's disclosure revealing that less than 1% of monthly users were affected. The company had previously stated that no passwords, private keys, or funds were exposed in these incidents.
