Brooklyn Man Sentenced for Masterminding $16 Million Crypto Heist on Coinbase Users

A 23-year-old man from Brooklyn, New York, orchestrated one of the largest cryptocurrency heists in history, swindling nearly $16 million from unsuspecting Coinbase users. Ronald Spektor, who operated under the alias '@lolimfeelingevil', openly boasted about his scheme on a Telegram channel called 'Blockchain enemies'.

The scam relied on exploiting human psychology, not advanced blockchain vulnerabilities or complex code-breaking. Between April 2023 and December 2024, Spektor and his network targeted Coinbase users with tailored phishing attacks. They would send suspicious security notifications and then contact the victims via email or phone, claiming to be a Coinbase security officer.

The con artists convinced many victims to transfer their funds to a new 'secure' wallet, which was actually controlled by Spektor. He would swiftly drain the wallets of their contents. The scheme ultimately affected over 100 users, resulting in losses totaling $15.94 million. Some victims lost more than $1 million in a single night.

Spektor laundered his ill-gotten gains through complex transactions involving cryptocurrency exchanges and mixing services. He also used some of the funds to gamble on online crypto casinos. In total, he wagered millions of dollars and likely lost significant amounts. Law enforcement eventually tracked Spektor down and seized over $500,000 in cash and cryptocurrencies from him.

Spektor pleaded guilty to 31 charges, including first-degree grand larceny and money laundering. Despite the prosecution's request for a 7-21 year prison sentence, he was sentenced to 4-12 years in prison, plus restitution of $16 million and forfeiture of seized assets.
