Brooklyn Man Sentenced to 4-12 Years for Stealing $16 Million via Coinbase Impersonation Scheme
Ronald Spektor, a 23-year-old Brooklyn resident, was sentenced to four to 12 years in prison for impersonating Coinbase support representatives and stealing nearly $16 million from around 100 victims.
Spektor convinced his victims that their accounts had been compromised, prompting them to transfer their cryptocurrency holdings into wallets he controlled. He then laundered the proceeds through various channels, including cryptocurrency exchanges, online gambling services, and retail purchases.
The scheme relied on Spektor's ability to create a sense of urgency, convincing victims that urgent action was required to protect their own funds. This tactic allowed him to bypass skepticism and pressure his victims into making unsolicited transfers.
As part of his sentence, Spektor is ordered to forfeit over $500,000 in assets and pay restitution of nearly $16 million to the people he defrauded.
