Brooklyn Man Sentenced to Prison for Massive Coinbase Phishing Scheme

Ronald Spektor, a 23-year-old Brooklyn man, was sentenced to four to 12 years in prison for his role in a massive phishing scheme that targeted Coinbase users.

The scam, which lasted over a year, saw Spektor posing as a Coinbase representative and contacting victims by phone. He convinced them that their accounts had been hacked and persuaded them to move their crypto into a new wallet for safety.

In reality, Spektor had access to the new wallets and drained the funds, stealing nearly $16 million from around 100 victims across the United States.

The scheme was uncovered by investigators who used transaction records and blockchain analysis to track the stolen funds. Spektor was found to have laundered the money through multiple exchanges and converted it into cash, which he then used to buy gift cards and purchase more digital assets.
