A Brooklyn man has been sentenced to up to 12 years in prison for stealing nearly $16 million from about 100 Coinbase users through fake support calls.
The scammer, Ronald Spektor, used phishing tactics to gain access to his victims' accounts and then transferred the funds out. The total loss is staggering, with each individual losing an average of around $160,000.
The sentence handed down to Spektor highlights a disturbing reality: cybercrime pays, and the justice system is failing to provide a real deterrent. While Spektor faces up to 12 years in prison, his victims will likely face permanent losses and may never recover their stolen funds.
