$BTC: A Lottery Ticket or an Investment Opportunity?

The Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland has released research on the understanding and adoption of cryptocurrencies, specifically Bitcoin (BTC), among U.S. households.

According to the study 'Do You Even Crypto, Bro? Cryptocurrencies in Household Finance', respondents cited insufficient information about BTC as the main reason for not owning it, while considering it a bad investment was the second most popular reason.

However, even among owners of BTC, there is limited understanding of the asset class and technology. Many respondents invest in BTC to profitably or diversify their portfolio, rather than due to an appreciation of its underlying value proposition.

The researchers found that when respondents were shown information about BTC's previous 12-month return, their desired bitcoin allocation increased by ~47%, while also increasing their expected returns by a few percentage points. This suggests that many investors are driven by past performance rather than a deep understanding of the asset.

The study also noted that BTC gains appear to be treated like lottery winnings, with respondents using them for immediate, temporary purchases rather than as a persistent increase in overall spending.
