Buffett Exits, Crypto Stocks Surge Amid Regulatory Shifts
Warren Buffett has stepped down as Chairman of Berkshire Hathaway after 61 years in the role, becoming Chairman Emeritus while remaining on the board. His son Howard G. Buffett, a 33-year board veteran, has taken over as Chairman. Greg Abel continues as CEO, having succeeded Warren Buffett less than a year ago.
Buffett's decision comes as he noted, 'Father Time always wins.' He expressed confidence in the future of Berkshire Hathaway, which he transformed from a failing textiles business into an insurance powerhouse with a nearly $300B equities portfolio.
The news follows the Securities and Exchange Commission's (SEC) approval of a five-year 'Innovation Exemption' allowing certain platforms to facilitate trading of tokenized versions of U.S.-listed securities. This has led to gains in crypto-related stocks, including Strategy, which rose 7%, MARA Holdings, up 6%, and Coinbase Global, Galaxy Digital, and Circle Internet Group, each climbing roughly 6%.
The Federal Reserve is also making changes to its stress testing framework, aiming to improve transparency, strengthen model reliability, and reduce volatility in capital requirements. The new rules will require publishing detailed stress test model information and averaging a bank's two most recent annual stress test results to smooth the stress capital buffer requirement.
