Bürgergeld Changes Cryptocurrency Treatment: Age-Based Allowances and Market Value Valuation
Bürgergeld, Germany's basic income support, has undergone changes in how it treats assets. Cryptocurrency holdings are now considered realisable assets and are valued at their market value on the day a claim is filed.
The allowances for claimants capable of work have changed depending on age, with younger individuals having lower allowances. For example, individuals up to 30 years old can keep €30,000 in assets, while those between 31-41 years old can keep €110,000, and those over 51 years old can keep €120,000.
If an individual has a holding that sits just above a threshold, the day they file their claim can decide whether it counts as an asset or not. For instance, if someone turns 41 on the 20th of a month, they have 12,500 euros free from the first of that same month.
The article also highlights the importance of having a coherent consolidated statement ready for the cut-off date, especially for individuals who hold their assets spread across several wallets and exchanges.
