Buterin Cites Bitcoin Innovations in Ethereum Scaling Push
Vitalik Buterin, Ethereum's co-founder and leading voice, has publicly acknowledged Bitcoin developers for their pioneering work on scaling innovations. Specifically, he highlighted technologies like Utreexo as influential to how Ethereum plans to address its growing state management challenges.
Utreexo was proposed by Bitcoin developer Tadge Dryja in 2019 under the MIT Digital Currency Initiative. The technology replaces the bulky data structure of Bitcoin's UTXO set with a dynamic hash-based accumulator, shrinking the UTXO set size to under one kilobyte and making it easier for nodes to run without sacrificing validation standards or security.
Ethereum is taking an account-based approach rather than UTXO, but Buterin outlined an integration strategy that combines different models to support increased network activity while preserving decentralization. This aligns with Ethereum's 2026 roadmap, which emphasizes several interrelated scaling initiatives, including gas limit increases and statelessness solutions.
