Buterin Confident in Bitcoin's Technical Fortresses Against Emerging Threats
Vitalik Buterin has expressed confidence in Bitcoin's ability to withstand emerging technical security challenges. Speaking on September 7, he argued that simple client and mining pool upgrades would be enough to address network-layer threats.
This stance counters the growing narrative in crypto circles that artificial intelligence could pose an existential risk to Bitcoin, potentially causing its value to drop more than 50% over the next two years. Buterin deemed the likelihood of breaking Bitcoin's core cryptographic elements as 'tiny.'
The Ethereum co-founder's argument hinges on a distinction between threats requiring social coordination and purely technical challenges that can be addressed through software updates. He believes Bitcoin's proof-of-work system, which has accumulated 2^96 hashes over its lifetime, makes it nearly impossible to mount a successful attack.
