Buterin Dismisses AI Cybersecurity Threats: Formal Verification Key to Strengthening Defenses
Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin pushed back against claims that AI could give hackers an unfair advantage in cybersecurity. He argued that increasingly capable AI systems could also strengthen defensive software engineering.
The approach he prefers centers on formal verification, where mathematical proofs test whether software satisfies clearly defined security properties. This method does not guarantee complete security on its own, as developers must first define the properties they want the software to satisfy.
Ethereum's current protocol research plan gives formal verification a wider role. The Ethereum Foundation expects work on an L1 zkEVM to improve verification tools and verified cryptographic components.
