Buterin Dismisses AI Threat to Bitcoin's Security
Vitalik Buterin has downplayed concerns that artificial intelligence could cause Bitcoin to lose half its value by weakening assumptions about the network's security. Liron Shapira, a crypto commentator, had warned of this possibility, but Buterin disagreed.
In response, Buterin said the chance of AI breaking Bitcoin's hashing or proof-of-work is 'tiny', while arguing that the harder issue would be moving the network through a security upgrade.
Beterin pointed out that managing the transition itself, not a cryptographic failure, was the main risk. He believes Bitcoin can handle network-layer problems without needing broad social consensus.
Shapira later updated his estimate to 40% chance of AI causing significant damage, crediting Buterin and another commentator for the shift.
