Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has called on crypto executives to prioritize collective security over competition, warning that the next two years will be critical for the industry's survival. In an interview with MoneyControl, Buterin emphasized the need to protect user assets, suggesting that regulatory frameworks in several jurisdictions are still being shaped. He argued that recent high-profile hacks, including the record-breaking $6 billion breach at Binance, have exposed vulnerabilities in centralized platforms.

Buterin highlighted that bad actors are increasingly targeting user interfaces and centralized components rather than smart contracts. He praised Binance's decision to launch Binance Smart Chain, noting that on-chain operations can provide higher security levels. The Ethereum team is also working on a roadmap to enhance security ahead of Q-Day, as supercomputers become more powerful.

Industry leaders and crypto users largely agree that without improved asset safety, centralized exchanges risk losing capital and support from traditional finance firms. Recent breaches, such as the one at Brazil's largest exchange, Mercado, have temporarily suspended trading and raised concerns about tighter regulatory requirements. Buterin's warnings come as regulators in the US and Europe have previously cited investor-protection concerns to delay major developments in the sector.
