Bybit Secures Austrian E-Money License, Eyes Regulated Payment Expansion
Bybit's Austrian payments subsidiary has secured an electronic money institution license from Austria's Financial Market Authority, paving the way for the exchange to offer payment and e-money services in Europe.
The license was granted to Bybit Payments GmbH, a separate entity from Bybit EU GmbH, which is authorized under the European Union's Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation since May 2025. This move provides a legal basis for future payment capabilities, including person-to-person payments, merchant payment solutions, open banking features, and card products.
The exchange has not specified why Malta was excluded from services provided by Bybit.eu, which serves users across the European Economic Area (EEA), excluding Malta. Bybit Payments GmbH will handle regulated electronic money and payment products as they are introduced, while Bybit EU GmbH is authorized to provide crypto custody, exchange, placement, and transfer services.
This regulatory milestone could help strengthen Bybit's relationship with banks, payment providers, and enterprises, reducing its reliance on third-party payment infrastructure.
