CAD Surges as Oil Prices Soar Amid Iran-US Tensions

The Canadian Dollar is experiencing a surge in value due to rising oil prices. The USD/CAD currency pair has been losing ground for three consecutive days, trading around 1.3770 during Asian hours on Friday.

The increase in oil prices is largely attributed to the escalating tensions between the US and Iran, which have led to a standoff over control of the Strait of Hormuz. In response, Washington has proposed measures aimed at severely restricting Iran's economy, including targeting banks, businesses, shipping registries, cash transfers, and smuggling operations.

According to Scotiabank strategists, the Canadian Dollar is benefiting from both 'broad dollar weakness' and signs of progress on US-Canada trade. They note that intraday gains remain relatively contained but emphasize that the currency's 0.3% rise is second only to the NZD among major currencies.
