California Governor Gavin Newsom has signed landmark legislation that bars government officials from launching memecoins. The measure, known as AB 2409, will prohibit state and municipal officials, including elected representatives, appointed officials, and legislative members, from issuing digital tokens to the public through purchase, donation, or value exchange mechanisms.

The law does not apply to existing memecoin transactions but focuses on new token listings. Starting January 1, 2027, cryptocurrency exchanges will be restricted from listing newly created memecoins if they're issued by or developed in collaboration with a designated government official.

Newsom referenced President Trump's cryptocurrency venture and related investor losses when justifying the legislation. He stated that 'no official should profit off their office.'
