California Bans Public Officials From Issuing Memecoins
California Governor Gavin Newsom has signed into law AB 2409, which prohibits state and local government officials from issuing memecoins. This measure aims to combat corruption by preventing public officials from having financial interests in digital assets.
The new law defines a memecoin as a digital asset whose primary characteristics and values are associated with celebrities, current events, jokes, or other social influences.
Starting January 1, 2027, California-based exchanges will be barred from listing new public-official memecoins for residents of the state. Existing listings will not be affected.
The law does not create a criminal penalty for violating its provisions, but rather provides civil remedies such as injunctive relief and disgorgement through the California Attorney General's office.
