California Bans Public Officials From Issuing Memecoins
California Governor Gavin Newsom has signed a law that bans public officials from issuing memecoins. The legislation, Assembly Bill 2409, aims to sever the link between public office and speculative crypto tokens. It prohibits state and local public officials from making memecoins available for purchase or exchange of value.
The bill targets digital asset platforms in California, which will not be allowed to list new memecoins tied to federal, state, or local officeholders starting in 2027. This means that existing tokens like the Official Trump memecoin would not be immediately delisted from exchanges in California under the new law.
The law is seen as a direct rebuke of President Donald Trump's own memecoin venture, which has generated hundreds of millions of dollars in royalties even as buyers suffered multibillion-dollar losses. Governor Newsom framed the measure as a way to make California's economy work for people, not the powerful.
