California Blocks Public Officials From Meme Coin Profiteering
California has introduced new legislation aimed at preventing state and local officials from using their influence to profit from cryptocurrency. The law, set to take effect in 2027, prohibits elected officials, government leaders, and public employees from creating or promoting meme coins tied to their job or image.
The ban also applies to crypto platforms, which will no longer be able to sell meme coins to Californians. Those found violating the law could face legal action and lose any profits made from these transactions.
According to Governor Newsom, the law is in response to recent high-profile meme coins, such as one tied to President Trump. The governor cited these examples as reasons for implementing stricter regulations on the use of public officials' influence in cryptocurrency.
