California Closes Meme Coin Loophole for Public Officials
California has introduced new regulations targeting meme coin launches by public officials. The law, signed into effect on September 27, prohibits state and local officials from issuing speculative tokens.
The platform provision of the law begins on January 1, 2027, and restricts digital-asset service providers from offering qualifying meme coins to California residents when they were issued on or after that date and are linked to a federal, state, or local public official.
This is not a statewide ban on meme coin trading. Existing political tokens, such as TRUMP, will not be automatically delisted, but new launches must comply with the law's requirements.
