California Senate Votes to Ban Public Officials' Memecoin Issuance
California lawmakers have passed a bill to restrict public officials' involvement with memecoins. The California Senate voted unanimously on Wednesday in favor of Assembly Bill 2409, which aims to prevent conflicts of interest and 'pay-to-play arrangements'.
The bill defines memecoins as digital assets whose value is derived primarily from public interest, speculation, or community engagement. It would prohibit digital asset service providers from offering California residents memecoins issued on or after January 1, 2027, that are offered by or in partnership with federal public officials or state or local public officers.
The bill now awaits the governor's signature and has already received significant attention due to its potential impact on the crypto market. The Official Trump (TRUMP) memecoin is currently the fifth-largest memecoin, with a market capitalization of $688 million and an estimated $3.2 billion in underwater investments.
The TRUMP token's value has seen a 53% increase over the past week, recouping some losses from its 67% decline over the past year. The Trump family's crypto ventures have also been linked to obstacles in passing the Digital Asset Market Clarity (CLARITY) Act, a bipartisan bill aimed at regulating the US crypto market.
