Canaan Unveils 'Hash-to-Heat' Solutions at BTCHEL Conference
Canaan Inc., a leading player in bitcoin mining hardware, is showcasing its innovative 'hash-to-heat' solutions at the BTCHEL conference in Helsinki, Finland. The company aims to demonstrate how its mining technology can contribute to decarbonizing energy systems by integrating high-performance computing with district and home heating solutions.
At the heart of Canaan's presentation is its Nordic district heating project, powered by its Avalon A1566HA hydro-cooled mining units. These machines convert computing heat into hot water (around 80°C) for sustainable energy use. As of September 2026, the 8 MW setup is providing heat to approximately 2,800 homes.
Canaan is extending its heat-reuse innovation to individual households through its Avalon Home Miner series. These devices combine bitcoin mining with space heating, balancing performance and energy efficiency while functioning quietly enough for home use. Key models include the Avalon Nano 3S, Avalon Mini 3, and AvalonQ.
The company's pivot toward 'hash-to-heat' solutions could diversify its revenue streams while aligning with broader sustainability goals. However, its success will depend on market adoption and regulatory conditions, particularly as governments scrutinize the energy impact of bitcoin mining.
