Canada's Big Six Banks Team Up on Tokenized Deposit System
Canada's 'big six' banks are teaming up to explore the use of tokenized deposits in modernizing their payments systems. The participating institutions, which include Bank of Montreal, Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce, National Bank of Canada, Royal Bank of Canada (RBC), The Bank of Nova Scotia, and TD Bank Group, aim to create a faster, more efficient, and programmable payment system for Canadian customers.
The initiative follows regulatory clarification from Canada's Office of the Superintendent of Financial Institutions (OSFI), which stated that tokenized deposits are not legally distinct from traditional deposits. This means that banks can now explore the use of blockchain technology in improving their payments infrastructure without fear of regulatory hurdles.
The project, which is currently in its first phase, involves moving tokenized deposits efficiently across financial institutions. The participating banks may invite other deposit-taking institutions to join the initiative at a later stage.
