Canada's Big Six Banks Unite to Tokenize Deposits
Six major banks in Canada are exploring the development of a system that uses tokenized deposits to improve efficiency in transferring funds between financial institutions.
The participating banks, which include BMO, CIBC, NBC, RBC, Scotiabank, and TD Bank Group, aim to create a framework for tokenizing Canadian dollar-denominated deposits on blockchain or other digital platforms.
This would enable efficient transfer of tokenized deposits between financial institutions, with the long-term goal of connecting them to other new digital assets initiatives.
The banks also hope to achieve faster and more efficient payments for customers, as well as the ability to make programmable payments based on predetermined conditions.
The Canadian Office of the Superintendent of Financial Institutions (OSFI) has already issued guidelines for tokenized deposits, stating that their legal treatment is equivalent to traditional deposits.
