Canadian Banks Launch Tokenized Deposit Project
Canada's six largest banks, Bank of Montreal, CIBC, National Bank of Canada, RBC, Scotiabank, and TD Bank Group, are working together to develop a tokenized Canadian-dollar deposit system. This project aims to modernize deposit infrastructure without moving customer claims outside the conventional banking perimeter.
The distinction between tokenized deposits and stablecoins is crucial here. Tokenized deposits remain a claim against the commercial bank that issued them, with tokenization changing how those claims are recorded, transferred, and potentially programmed. The technology underlying these financial products does not determine their legal nature, according to Canada's Office of the Superintendent of Financial Institutions (OSFI).
The initial phase focuses on moving tokenized deposits between Canadian financial institutions. This is a narrower objective than building a digital Canadian dollar for consumers. No consumer launch date, blockchain architecture, or issuance model has been disclosed.
