Canadian Banks Unite for Blockchain-Powered Tokenized Deposits
Canada's six major banks have joined forces to explore the development of commercial tokenized deposits backed by the Canadian dollar (CAD). This unprecedented collaboration marks a significant step towards integrating blockchain technology into the core clearing and settlement layer of traditional finance.
The participating banks - BMO, CIBC, National Bank of Canada, RBC, Scotiabank, and TD - represent over 80% of Canada's credit assets and deposits. By pooling their resources, they aim to create a unified tokenized deposit transfer network within their institutions, leveraging distributed ledger technology to eliminate traditional batch processing and cross-border settlement frictions.
Once established, this system will enable real-time atomic settlements for enterprise and individual clients, with the long-term goal of integrating it with other emerging digital assets, real-world asset tokenization networks, and regulated on-chain financial markets. This would provide a faster, lower-cost, and programmable payments service.
