Canadian Banks Unite on Digital Tokenization System
TD Bank announced on Tuesday that six major Canadian banks have partnered to explore a digital tokenization system for their deposits. The initiative, which is expected to increase efficiency in interbank transactions, aims to connect with other emerging digital asset plans.
The participating banks include Montreal Bank, Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce (CIBC), Royal Bank of Canada, Toronto-Dominion Bank, Bank of Nova Scotia, and the Royal Bank of Canada. The project's first phase will focus on tokenizing deposits between participating banks.
Tokenized deposits are a digital representation of existing funds and assets held by banks, unlike stablecoins issued by cryptocurrency companies. This system enables programmable payments 24/7 within a regulated banking framework.
