Canton's Institutional Tokenization Efforts Gain Momentum with World Liberty's $4 Billion USD1 Launch
World Liberty Financial has launched $4 billion in USD1 stablecoins directly on the Canton Network, marking a significant milestone in institutional tokenization. The move aims to address a long-standing issue in the market: the separation of asset settlement and cash clearing.
Canton's unique architecture allows for atomic settlement, where both legs of a transaction settle simultaneously, eliminating the need for reconciliation and collateral buffers. This is particularly important for regulated desks, which require confidentiality to maintain their competitive edge.
The launch of USD1 on Canton follows the precedent set by USDCx, another stablecoin issued natively on the platform. World Liberty Financial has partnered with BitGo Bank & Trust to manage reserves and process minting and redemption requests, but the OCC has granted preliminary conditional approval for a national trust bank charter that will allow the company to take over these responsibilities.
The introduction of USD1 is expected to increase flexibility in funding, settling, and moving liquidity for institutions, as Eric Saraniecki, co-founder and head of network strategy at Digital Asset, noted. The stablecoin has already seen significant trading activity, with around $1.7 billion in turnover on the day of its launch.
