Carbonara Defends Bitcoin Mining Despite Opposing Local Project

Michael Carbonara, a Republican candidate for Florida's 22nd Congressional District, is facing scrutiny over his stance on data centers and bitcoin mining. Despite publicly opposing a local project called Project Tango in Palm Beach, he has expressed support for the industry as a whole.

At a recent candidate forum, Carbonara defended data centers, citing his own experience building one, but clarified it's actually a bitcoin mine. He mentioned that it's not an artificial intelligence (AI) data center and that he's been attacked by critics who want to stifle innovation.

The bitcoin mine in Michigan's Upper Peninsula has faced local opposition and is currently under lawsuit from Lake Superior Academy, which claims the noise disrupts student learning. Carbonara has argued that bitcoin mining can actually reduce energy costs, unlike AI data centers.

Carbonara's campaign funding relies heavily on cryptocurrency, with nearly $1 million raised in Bitcoin at its start. This has drawn attention to potential conflicts of interest and raises questions about how his words align with his business interests.
